What Is UL 1430 Wire?
UL 1430 wire is a cross-linked polyvinyl chloride (XLPVC) insulated wire. The cross-linking process results in a thin, flexible wire that’s ideal for the internal wiring of appliances and electronic equipment. This wire is tough, with good cut resistance and resistance to chemicals and fluids. A particular feature of the cross-linking process is that the PVC insulation does not melt when heated for soldering.

UL 1430 Wire Applications
Uses for UL 1430 lead wire include the internal wiring of appliances like cooking equipment, air conditioners, and hair dryers. Other applications include hookup wire for light fixtures, low voltage transformers, electronic equipment, power supplies, and computers. Manufacturers use this wire on high-speed automated cutting and stripping equipment.
UL 1430 Wire Construction
UL 1430 wire consists of a single copper conductor covered by XLPVC insulation. It is available in a wide range of colors.
Conductor
The single-core conductor has stranded or solid tinned copper wire with a round profile. The wire is flexible because individual wire strands are fine. The number of strands used depends on the wire size.
Insulation
The PVC insulation is cross-linked, a process that increases strength, resistance to melting and softening, and cut-through resistance. Irradiated PVC insulation changes the PVC from a thermoplastic material that softens under heat to a thermoset material that doesn't. The minimum insulation thickness of the wire is 16 mils, with the UL 1430 standard calling for an average insulation thickness of 15 mils.
UL 1430 Wire Compliances
UL 1430 insulated wire from AWC conforms to the following standards:
-
UL 1430: Internal wiring for appliances in terms of UL 758 wiring material standard.
-
MIL-Spec MIL-W-16878/2: All UL 1430 wire meets the requirements of this standard.
-
Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) compliance: The wire and its insulation contain less than the maximum allowed amount of the 10 restricted hazardous substances.
-
Canadian Standards Association: The wire conforms to the CSA type REW and RR-64 standards.
-
Flammability ratings: The wire conforms to the vertical and horizontal FR-1 and VW-1 rating requirements.
