Vented Cables are cables with usual conductors and a hollow tube within the cable. The typical tube is made from Nylon, Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), Polyurethane (PU), or Polyethylene (PE). Vented cables are often used to allow air or fluid to pass through without affecting the pressure and signal accuracy of the cable. Excess materials can often affect the integrity of a cable, so inserting a vent can lighten that pressure and measure it.
Vented Cables are often used for fuel flow systems, fuel level measurement, atmospheric pressure measurement, wastewater measurements, water level and water monitoring systems, data loggers, and many other systems. At Allied Wire and Cable, we have different tubing and harnessing products that offer multiple advantages. We also offer custom vented tube cables whenever specific requirements are needed.
Our Custom Vented Cable Solution
One Allied Wire and Cable customer manufactured monitoring systems that measure the flow rate and quantity of a liquid or gas. They had designed a waste-management system that required a custom cable with a vent tube. This cable needed to be submersible and connect to a level sensor.
The custom vented cable we built for them had eight control-sized conductors insulated with polyurethane and color-coded for easier identification and installation. This cable also featured a black PUR jacket to protect against water and other waste. It was then covered with an aluminum foil shield that helped reduce electrical interference. This may sound relatively standard, but the custom feature lied at the very center of the cable. It was a vent tube that allowed for air and fluids to be transported, while also balancing the barometric pressure within the atmosphere.
The customer already had their own ratings, gauge size, and other specs designed for this cable, but they needed help with manufacturing it. Previously, they had been ordering from another manufacturer but were unsatisfied with the costs and lead times. For this high-quality, customized product, we guaranteed a lead time of only three to four weeks. The customer was also pleased with the price for a blanket order that gave them volume discounts without having to store all of the material on-site.
