What Is UL 3239 Wire?

This high-voltage lead wire (HVLR), UL 3239 wire style, covers single core lead and hook-up wires with a thermoplastic or thermoset insulation suitable for high-voltage direct current (DC) applications. Available DC voltage ratings include anywhere from 10kV to 40kV.

The high-temperature wire uses a thermoset silicone insulation material that's suitable for use to 150 degrees Celsius. Certain UL 3239 style wire allows for DC voltages up to 60 kV and high-temperature applications to 200°C.

UL 3239 Wire Construction

The wire consists of a conductor covered by a thermoset or thermoplastic insulation. It may optionally have a shield, jacket, or covering.

Conductors

UL 3239 allows for a wide range of solid and stranded copper, nickel, and aluminum conductors subject to some limitations. The stock carried by Allied Wire & Cable primarily uses tinned copper-stranded conductors. The copper conductor material is fully annealed. Conductor sizes go from 24 AWG to 10 AWG.

Insulation

The silicone rubber insulation used on AWC UL 3239 wires has a maximum temperature rating of 150°C. The insulation strips easily but does not shrink or burn during soldering. The insulation has high dielectric strength and its thickness varies depending on the rated wire voltage. It is resistant to abrasion and deformation.

Jacket and Shield

AWC wire does not have the optional covering, jacket, or shield.

UL 3239 Wire Applications

Applications for UL 3239 wire include direct current (DC) high-voltage electronics and appliances together with high-temperature applications. Examples include cathode ray tubes used in older TV receivers, photomultiplier tubes, image intensifiers, signs, lighting fixtures, and X-ray equipment. Other applications include ignition systems, electrostatic precipitators as well as high-temperature applications including motors, furnaces, heaters, and dryers.

Similar Lead Wire

The maximum diameter of UL style 3239 high-voltage lead wires is 10 AWG. If you need a larger high-voltage lead wire, consider  UL style 10475 wire. Specifications for these two UL-style lead wires, UL 10475 and UL 3239, overlap.

Available sizes include:

  • 8 AWG
  • 6 AWG
  • 4 AWG
  • 2 AWG

AWC UL 10475 wire has stranded tinned copper conductors and silicone rubber insulation with a maximum working temperature of 150°C and, depending on individual wire specifications, a maximum DC voltage of up to 40kV.
