What Is Type G-GC Cable?
Type ground-ground check (G-GC) cable is used to supply power to underground mining equipment. The cable includes a ground check wire for ground wire monitoring as required by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). It has three individual phase wires and two ground wires rated for operation at up to 2,000 volts. The cable has a chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) jacket. This MSHA approved mining cable has excellent impact and abrasion resistance and is specifically engineered to withstand repeated flexing and tension.

G-GC Cable Construction
Type G-GC cables consist of three separate phase conductors, two smaller insulated ground wires, and a ground check wire bundled into a circular shape by a CPE jacket.
Conductors
The wire has three phase conductors colored red, white, and black. Each conductor has hundreds of fine wire strands of pure soft-drawn copper. The conductors use a rope-lay stranding technique that significantly improves cable flexibility. Conductors have synthetic rubber insulation made from ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM).
Ground Wires
The cable has two pure copper-stranded ground wires. These have a smaller diameter than the phase conductors and green EPDM insulation.
Ground Check Wire
There's a ground check wire to provide ground wire monitoring. The ground check wire has yellow insulation for easy identification. Ground wire monitoring works by passing a current down the check wire and back through the ground wires. A failure in the equipment ground circuit interrupts the ground check circuit and this, in turn, trips the circuit breaker supplying the cable.
Jacket
The entire cable has a chlorinated polyethylene jacket that’s compression-molded after extrusion. CPE is tough with excellent oil, water, abrasion, and crush-resistant properties. Manufacturers use non-wicking runner fillers and binders to maintain a uniform circular profile.
Type G-GC Cable Applications
You use type G-GC cables for three-phase power applications that require fail-safe ground wire monitoring. These include underground applications as well as mobile and portable electrical equipment. Typical examples include underground conveyors, shuttle cars, continuous and manual mining equipment, and submersible pumps.
