XHHW hook-up and lead wire is a 600V thermoset insulated wire for use in wet or dry settings and rated up to 90°C for commercial and industrial applications. This form of wiring is superior to similar wiring with PVC cabling because it will not emit toxic smoke when it burns, which is more common with other cabling using PVC. The coating of XHHW building wire is also much more durable than nylon coatings used in inferior wiring systems, enabling it to be more flexible during wire pulls. XHHW wire also is more durable in low temperatures and features better electrical properties.
While XHHW wire can be used up to 90 degrees Celsius (194 degrees Fahrenheit) in dry conditions, it can only be used up to 75 degrees Celsius (167 degrees Fahrenheit) in wet conditions. The XHHW 2 wire cable standard requires that the cable be XPLE insulated, water resistant, and usable in both wet and dry conditions up to 90 degrees Celsius (194 degrees Fahrenheit). These are available to meet multiple voltage requirements.

What is XHHW wire?
XHHW wire is a type of electrical wire that is commonly used for building wiring and electrical installations. It is made with cross-linked polyethylene insulation, which provides excellent thermal and electrical properties. This wire is known for its durability, high-temperature resistance, and ability to resist moisture and abrasion. It is suitable for use in both indoor and outdoor applications and can be used in conduit or as direct burial wire. XHHW wire is available in either aluminum or copper wiring and in a range of sizes and colors to meet your specific electrical needs.
What are the differences between copper and aluminum XHHW wire?
It is important to understand the differences between copper and aluminum XHHW wire and their suitable applications. Copper wiring is considerably heavier than its counterpart, aluminum wire. However, copper is more conductive, making it a more effective and expensive solution. Aluminum, on the other hand, is much lighter than copper. However, with XHHW wire, this comes at a cost, as aluminum is less conductive than copper. While both forms of wiring offer considerable flexibility, it is critical to ensure that the wiring selected is the one most suitable to your installation requirements. Furthermore, in some localities, aluminum wiring may not be approved whereas copper wiring may be. Therefore, it is crucial when selecting the correct cabling to verify that the wiring selected meets any applicable standards or legal codes applicable to your application.
All XHHW Wire sold by Allied Wire and Cable is built to the most rigorous industry standards. Agencies who issue standards for XHHW Wire include, among others:
- UL 44 Standard*
- NFPA 70-2008
- ASTM-B3 Standard for Soft or Annealed Copper Wire for Electrical Purposes
- ASTM-B8 Standard for Concentric-Lay-Stranded Copper Conductors, Hard, Medium-Hard, or Soft
- ASTM-B800 Standard for 8000 Series Aluminium Alloy Wire for Electrical Purposes
- ASTM-B801-18 Standard for Concentric-Lay-Stranded Conductors of 8000 series Aluminium Alloy for Subsequent Covering or Insulation
- ANSI/NEMA WC 70 Standard for Power Cables Rated 2000 Volts or Less for the Distribution of Electrical Energy
- Federal Specification J-C-30B Cable and Wire, Electrical
- CSA CS22.1 in Canada
- NOM-001-SEDE in Mexico
