SXL vs GXL Wire
In our This vs. That series, we're comparing (and contrasting) two seemingly similar products. A lot of products seem the same at first glance but can greatly affect the outcome of your next application. Today, we're taking a closer look at SXL and GXL primary wires. These automotive primary wires are ideal for use in a wide variety of automotive applications and are SAE approved. However, there are a few key differences.
What is SXL Wire?
SXL Wire is a single conductor primary wire with cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation. SXL wire has a temperature range of -51°C to 125°C and a voltage rating. SXL wire is a thick-wall special purpose wire is designed for use in high-temperature applications, including engine compartments.
What is GXL Wire?
GXL Wire is a single conductor primary wire that also features cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation. It has the same temperature rating and voltage rating as SXL Wire as well. This wire's slender proportions and thin wall make it incredibly ideal for engine compartments, though it is suitable for use in colder environments as well.
What's the difference between SXL and GXL wire?
The main difference between these two wires is their insulation thickness. SXL wire has thicker insulation than GXL, so it is slightly more durable. However, GXL is more ideal for applications with limited space. (TXL wire has the thinnest wall of all automotive primary wires). These wires also meet different specifications. While both cables meet SAE J-1128, their Chrysler and Ford Specs are different. GXL wire meets Ford M1L-85B and Chrysler MS-8900. SXL Wire meets Ford M1L-85A and Chrysler MS-5919 specs.

Both SXL and GXL wires are cross-linked primary wires, but as you can see they have differences. Allied Wire and Cable also carries PVC primary wires, including GPT, TWP, and HDT wires. We also carry a wide variety of battery cables. Do you have more questions about Automotive Wire? Read our FAQs or view our automotive wire catalog for additional information.
