Ribbon cables are widely used in the telecommunications industry. They are most commonly found in the internal wiring of computers, hard drives, CD drives, and floppy disk drives. Flat ribbon cables consist of multiple conductors, usually stranded copper, running parallel to each other. Many ribbon cable assemblies include connectors that decrease installation time.
Also known as multi-planar cables or flat cables, ribbon cables are color-coded to prevent reverse connections. The ribbon cable's flat shape makes it popular for use in flat spaces since it can fit multiple conductors into one space. Even though ribbon cables are an extremely versatile type of computer cable, a custom ribbon cable is sometimes needed for unique applications.
Our Custom Ribbon Cable Solution
One customer approached Allied Wire and Cable to help design a cable for an LED light in marine environments. Since this application required certain specifications, they knew stock cable would not get the job done and decided to contact us. This customer needed a custom flat flexible cable with water resistance in a custom cable assembly.
The customer knew they needed a ribbon cable specifically because the flat construction made for greater flexibility and the ability to lay flat against surfaces in a tight space. They requested an 18 AWG four-conductor, co-extruded, heat bonded ribbon cable with PVC insulation, a PVC jacket, and a custom color code. This custom ribbon cable was rated to 300 volts and was UL recognized for 720 hours of sunlight resistance. This flat ribbon cable was designed to go with IDC connectors. These IDC connectors replace the need to strip the cable for easier installation. This ribbon cable assembly saved this customer time and money.
Before designing this custom cable assembly with Allied Wire and Cable, the customer had been regularly dissatisfied with the stock IDC ribbon cable they had been buying from another provider. However, they were extremely satisfied with our excellent service, short lead times, and high-quality custom cable assemblies, and have been a loyal customer ever since.
If you are in need of a custom ribbon cable assembly for a unique application, Allied Wire and Cable can help. We will work with you to produce a cable solution that suits your needs.
