Low-smoke zero-halogen (LSZH) cables are made with thermoplastic or thermoset jackets. These types of jackets are made from materials that won’t emit halogen or high levels of smoke when exposed to high temperatures.
LSZH cables are made to be flame retardant and limit the amount of toxic and corrosive gas emitted during combustion. This makes them ideal for high-temperature environments or applications that involve high heat. LSZH cables are often used in applications with little ventilation, like in the inside of aircraft, tanks, offshore installation, and submarines.
Our Custom LSZH Cable Solution
One Allied Wire and Customer that manufactured crystal oscillators, along with other sensor and frequency control devices, was in the market for a new LSZH cable. However, this cable also needed to be resistant to seawater and diesel fuel since it was going to be used in an offshore rig.
All of these characteristics can easily be found in separate cables, but this customer needed a single wire with all of these abilities. It isn’t uncommon for a customer to need varying attributes in a single cable, so we were ready to take on the challenge.
Working closely with the customer, an Allied Wire and Cable account representative helped design a solution. This custom LSZH cable was made with zero-halogen, TPE insulation, an overall Aluminum-Mylar tape foil shield, a tinned copper braided shield, and a specially made zero-halogen PUR jacketing. In addition to being low-smoke zero-halogen, diesel resistant, and water-resistant, this cable was also made to RoHS compliance standards.
If you are struggling to find a single cable that can meet all of your application requirements, Allied Wire and Cable can help. Call our custom cable experts at 800-472-4655 or visit our Custom Cable Design Center to get started.
